We are accepting custom orders for the holidays up until October 15, 2020. We apologize for any inconvenience. We have worked non-stop throughout the pandemic, and are so very grateful for the business that has come our way during this challenging economic time. We cannot however, take on rush jobs for Christmas, due to the uncertainty of government restrictions that may arise. Thank you for understanding, be safe! If you are one of the many many kind people who have allowed flexible timelines, we appreciate you!!!
Please have a read, and if you have a flexible timeline, let’s chat! OR check out our ready to ship section – most of our samples can be sized, just ask!
Step One – Getting Going: Buying a bespoke ring is a fun experience of designing a special piece from start to finish! I promise it’s not as hard as you think, and so many people say that I make it easy and stress free! You may have some ideas of your dreams/hopes/desires and need help putting together the pieces. Reading this page is a great first step, as is doing a little bit of visual research into what you like. If you’ve browsed through our sold rings or had a look in the gallery, perhaps you have bookmarked rings that speak to you and you would like to make one that is inspired by the design, but change the gemstone, shape, metal colour, or want something you have never seen before with my creative input!
How much does it cost? The average amount spent on a custom ring is $6000CAD. My minimum cost for custom engagement rings is $3000CAD, gold wedding bands start at $1000CAD, a custom made solitaire mount starts at $1800CAD plus the cost of a stone. The cost of engagement rings in my ready to purchase collection is $3000-15000 CAD and browsing the website may help establish what different ring designs cost.
I saw something online, can you copy it? I am happy to work with ideas and inspiration and add my own aesthetic and style to a special piece for you, however I will not be able to replicate other designer’s work because my hands are not their hands, and I do not have access to exact measurements from their products. Many of my clients have seen my work and build their design based upon work I have made in the past. Hopefully you are contacting me because you love my aesthetic!
Can I bring my own gemstone? In short, yes, if you can drop it off in person. If you are hoping to re-use a family heirloom stone (a family diamond is an heirloom stone, something special you inherited, or a special piece of jewellery you need reworked. I do not consider a loose diamond you recently purchased elsewhere at a cheap rate or direct from wholesale an heirloom stone). Please note that I must receive gem(s) to re-purpose in person, this can unfortunately be difficult for clients far away, who wish to make a custom piece. If you are able to drop off your gem in person, we can ship the finished re-work to you. Our third party insurer can cover your shipment for a value of up to 10K USD while in transit on it’s way back to you. I do not use very small diamond “melee” from previous settings as they can be compromised during the process and may not be calibrated even sizes for our production methods.
Step Two – Align On The Vision: We schedule a 20 minute phone consultation. Together we can go over your ideas and elaborate on any details you included in the form when you schedule a phone call. You can schedule this phone call. The goal is for us to get on the same page about this project.
Does it cost anything to have a consultation?
COVID-19 has affects small businesses, in efforts to supplement Phone calls are a great way to get the conversation going about custom work. An in person meeting may require a deposit, we explain more about that in step 3! Schedule a phone consultation
If you require a video consultation or virtual shopping appointment, there is a $20 nominal fee for this service and access to the entire collection and my attention during this time.
Step Three – Designing Starts!: We pick a stone, design several drawings options for your ring, and bring it to life with a computer model before producing your ring.
What does the sourcing fee pay for, and when is it required? Once a budget and general idea of the project have been established in the initial phone consultation, I need to get to work finding stones for you and designing with specific measurements. A $250 design and gem sourcing fee covers my time to begin research and design, and is credited towards your custom purchase. In the event you do not move forward with a custom piece, unfortunately, this fee is non-refundable.
If you are shopping for the perfect stone:
– The designers time to source gemstones appropriate to your request, limited to 3. These are reviewed by you in photos or videos if you are out of town, or in person if you are local**
If you are creating a ring that requires designing around your stones, or a wedding band, this fee covers:
– Up to 5 layouts or sketches of ring designs (hand drawings or line drawings done by computer) – one of these designs will become the finished design, additional computer renderings are $150CAD. Purchase Design Fee Listing
A digital work order outlining your project details and pricing will be sent to you. A payment link will be made for you in our custom listings. Payments accepted are Interac E-transfer (if you are in Canada), or other major credit cards are accepted on our site through Stripe payment gateway. Please do not send a paypal transfer. It will not be accepted.
* Design fee is non-refundable in case of non-completion of the project.
**Please note that stones of significant value may not be available for viewing due to restrictions from suppliers. I will do my best to show photos and videos to capture their integrity and beauty. Not every stone can be taken out on loan from a supplier. Please only request stone viewings if you are serious about making a purchase.
Step Four – Finalize Design: Finalizing your gemstone choice is the most important part of a gem-focused design. Saying yes to a gem or a diamond is a big choice and exciting. I usually recommend people go with their instincts. The stone will then help guide and inspire the final details and measurements, giving me a foundation from which to work and finalize the production plan.
What is the custom payment plan? Once you have selected a gemstone, a) a payment of 50% of the cost of your ring is requested to move forward OR b) a payment in full for the gemstone if it is valued above $3000 is requested. Because of the unique nature of custom design, unfortunately, I do not offer refunds for amounts paid toward custom work or exchanges or return on custom jewellery. In the event that a customer decides not to continue to completion with a custom order once a deposit has been made, there will be no refund for work completed up to the point of cancellation. All pieces must be paid in full prior to or at the time of delivery or shipment oncce completed.
Step Five – Production: This is the most exciting part and where you let me take care of the finer details. First we take one of your inspiration sketches or drawings from Step Three, and refine it and turn it into a 3D computer drawing, or a hand-carved model. Only minor adjustments need to be made at this point. Good communication and making sure both designer and client are happy to move through each step are integral to the custom process.
What is your lead time on custom work? From the time the model is approved, a custom piece of jewellery may takeseveral weeks to months start to finish. 3-4 weeks is enough time to create a wedding ring with no stones, 2-3 months is enough time to create a ring with multiple stones and design considerations along the way. The timeline can vary depending on the stone we sourced, the intricacy of the design, and the seasonal time of year (FYI if you are looking for holidays proposal best to leave a little extra time!)
What if I make changes after I have finalized the design? If at any point you are curious as to what stage your ring is at in production, do not hesitate to ask. Any changes made at this time will be subject to fees to cover re-modelling, re-casting, or changing gemstones, and delay completion of your piece.
